SMITH — A year after falling short in the Division 1A state championship, the Wells softball team regained the state title.
In 2025, the Lady Leopards lost 15-5 in the final to Pahranagat Valley.
But on Saturday, Wells claimed its second state championship in a five-season span — winning its first in 18 years back in 2022 — and defeated Pyramid Lake for the sixth time in seven tries and for the second time in the state tournament by a score of 7-3 for all the marbles.
Versus Pyramid Lake — Championship
The Lady Leopards plated three runs in the bottom of the second, two in the third — leading 5-2 — and tacked to two in the home half of the fifth after giving one back in the top of the fourth.
Andreina Mercado hit 2-for-3 with a triple, drove in a scored once.
Mayte Casas batted 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Adriana Aguilar finished 2-for-4.
Aryanna Rodriguez was 1-for-3, drove in two runs and scored one.
Khloe DelRio and Dusty Uhlig both went 1-for-3 and crossed once apiece.
Jess Wright closed out the knocks at 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Without hits, Jitzel Rivas scored two runs, and Grace Otto drove in one.
In the circle, DelRio got the complete-game win and allowed three unearned runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks across seven innings.
Versus Pyramid Lake — Semifinal
On Friday, Wells reached the championship with a low-scoring, defensive-dogfight victory over the Lady Lakers.
Trailing 1-0 — Pyramid Lake plating its lone run in the top of the fourth — the Lady Leopards walked off on a two-run homer by Casas that also crossed Rivas with one away in the home half of the seventh inning.
Casas led the way at the plate and hit 2-for-3 with the game-winning two-run bomb.
Uhlig batted 1-for-3 with a triple, and Rivas finished 1-for-3 and scored on Casas’ dinger.
DelRio spun a gem and finally got some help from the offense, giving up one run on eight hits with six Ks and a free pass across seven frames.
Versus Round Mountain — Quarterfinal
In the opening round, the Lady Leopards exploded offensively in an 18-8 win over Round Mountain in five innings.
The Lady Knights opened a 5-0 lead with five runs in the top of the second and went up 6-0 with a run in the third.
Wells cut the deficit to two with three runs in the home half of the third, erupted for 12 runs in the fourth — giving up two in the top of the fifth — and walked it off early with a two-run double by Rivas in the bottom of the fifth.
Wright ripped 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs.
DelRio hit 2-for-3 with a double, drove in three runs and crossed once.
Rivas was a clean 1-for-1 with her game-winning two-RBI double and scored one run.
Casas closed a perfect 1-for-1 and crossed a team-high four times.
In total, four Wells batters — Uhlig, Rodriguez, Otto and Mercado — each finished 1-for-3.
Rodriguez scored two runs and drove in one, Otto crossed twice and Uhlig and Mercado scored once apiece.
Without a knock, Mercado crossed three times.
In the start, Rodriguez gave up five runs on three hits with three punchouts and three free passes through 1-1/3 innings.
DelRio earned the win from the bullpen and allowed three runs — two earned — on three hits with six Ks and three walks over 3-2/3 innings.
