WELLS — The Wells softball team is heading back to the state tournament with another No. 1 seed.
On Saturday, the No. 1 Lady Leopards claimed their second-consecutive 1A North championship — needing two games to beat No. 2 Pyramid Lake.
After dropping the first contest 8-5, Wells rebounded with a 10-3 victory in the second title game.
Championship Game
The Lady Leopards hit the ball extremely well at 19-for-34 and posted eight players with multiple knocks.
Adriana Aguilar batted a clean 3-for-3 with a double, scored three runs and drove in one.
Mayte Casas and Andreina Mercado each finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, Casas going for a triple.
Dusty Uhlig went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
In total, four Wells batters — Khloe DelRio, Jitzel Rivas, Aryanna Rodriguez and Gabby Garcia — all closed 2-for-4.
Delrio tagged two doubles, drove in four and scored once.
Rivas crossed two times and tallied an RBI, and Rodriguez notched an RBI.
In the circle, DelRio picked up the complete-game win and allowed three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and a walk across seven innings.
First Championship Game
In the first title game, Wells was limited to a run in the bottom of the first, two in the third and two in the fifth — while the Lady Lakers mounted two runs in the top of the first, third, fourth and fifth frames.
Uhlig led Wells at the plate and went a perfect 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
Aguilar was 2-for-3 with a double, scored three runs and drove in one.
DelRio hit 1-for-3 with an RBI triple, Rodriguez batted 1-for-3 with a double and Rivas finished 1-for-4 and scored a run.
In the circle, Rodriguez was chased after three innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a walk,
In relief, DelRio allowed two runs on four hits with seven Ks and a pair of free passes over four frames.
Versus Pyramid Lake — Semifinal
On Friday, the Lady Leopards punched their tickets to state with a 5-3 victory over Pyramid Lake.
Wells built a 5-0 lead with a run in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth.
The Lady Lakers made things interesting with three-unanswered with a run in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh but grounded out twice with the tying run at the plate to end the game.
DelRio had a big day at the dish and was a perfect 3-for-3 with a two-run dinger and two runs scored.
Uhlig batted 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and crossed once, and Aguilar hit 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Without a hit, Rodriguez crossed once on DelRio’s homer after drawing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second.
In the start, Rodriguez allowed three runs on seven hits with nine punchouts and three walks through 6-1/3 innings.
DelRio nailed down the save with a clean 2/3 of a frame.
Versus Carlin
In the first round, Wells opened the tournament with a 15-0 run-rule victory over No. 4 Carlin in three innings.
In the win, DelRio gave up just one hit and struck out nine with no walks in the three-inning shutout.
The Lady Leopards were efficient at the dish and hit 8-for-14.
DelRio crushed a clean 3-for-3, walked off Wells early with a two-run homer, hit a double and scored two times.
Rivas hit 2-for-3 with a double, scored two runs and drove in one.
Casas went 1-for-1 and crossed twice, Uhlig was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run and Mercado closed 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Without hits, Grace Otto, Avianna DelRio and Rodriguez scored two runs apiece — Aguilar crossing once.
For Carlin, Kayona Christensen went for the Lady Railroaders’ lone hit and finished 1-for-2.
In the circle, she took the loss and allowed nine runs on four hits with eight walks and a strikeout over 1-1/3 innings.
From the pen, Abigail Caple gave up six runs on four hits with four free passes and two punchouts across 1-1/3.

The North No. 1 Lady Leopards (21-4 overall, 15-0 in league) will face South No. 2 Round Mountain (13-7 overall, 10-4 in league) in the first round of the Division 1A Nevada State Softball Championships at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at Smith Valley High School.
