WELLS — The Wells baseball team entered the Division 1A North regional tournament on its home field with a No. 1 seed and just one loss in league play.

However, the Leopards suffered two losses during the tourney — the second costing the team its second-consecutive berth to state.

In the first round, Wells hammered No. 4 Pyramid Lake 18-3 by the run rule through four innings.

A trio of Leopards — Alex Garcia, Tristen Zimmerman and Charles Peterson — all batted 2-for-3.

In relief, Calton tossed a scoreless, hitless frame and struck out two.

Versus Smith Valley

In their second game on Friday, the Leopards were lit up in the middle innings by No. 2 Smith Valley.

After leading 2-1 at the end of the first, Wells gave up four runs in the top of the third, five in the fifth and two in the sixth,

The Leopards added a run in the bottom of the fourth and fought back with five in the home half of the fifth. Trailing 12-8 going to the seventh, the deficit grew to five as the Bulldogs crossed one in the top half.

Wells battled back with four in the bottom of the seventh but struck out with the tying run at third base to end the game in a 13-12 loss.

Versus Mineral County

On Saturday morning, the Leopards lost consecutive games for just the second time — the first time against 1A opponents all season — and were bounced from the tournament with a 10-8 loss against No. 3 Mineral County in the consolation final and the play-in to the state tournament.

The Leopards swept the Serpents in the regular seasons by scores of 8-7 and 7-4.

Wells trailed 2-1 after the third inning but took a major hit when the Serpents scored six runs in the top of the fourth.

The Leopards battled back with seven-consecutive runs with two in the bottom of the fifth and five in the sixth.

With the game tied 8-8, Mineral County took the lead with a two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh.

In the home half, Wells placed two runners on base — Aguilar working a leadoff walk and Hunt winning a full count with two away — but the runners were stranded and the season ended with a flyout to left field. Hunt led the attack at the dish at 2-for-3 and scored once, and Peterson finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Calton hit 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

In relief, Peterson allowed two unearned runs on one hit with three Ks across 3-1/3.
